"The snotel remote weather station on Rock Creek reported the lowest amount of snow for this date in the 32 year history of records. The amount of snow is more typical of about May 6, not March 24. See http://www.sgrhoa.net/snowpublic.htm" · View

Jim, it looks like there is not much snow in the Gore this winter. My troops are getting ready for the trip I planned for last summer. Coming to Gore Creek Camp on June 29 from all around the world: Ukraine, Israel, Toronto, Boston, Baltimore, New Jersey. Hope the weather will cooperate.

Jim’s suggestion is one of the easier valleys as well, which is great if you don’t have that much experience but still want to have some great views and plenty of peaks to hike up. It’s also a fairly expansive area too – there’s a lot in every direction. As you go northward, the valleys [...]

Boy, that’s a good question. One good idea might be setting up a camp above the graves on the Gore Creek trail towards Red Buffalo Pass. Great options: Red Peak, Red Buffalo Pass, Gore Lake, Snow Lake, Snow Peak, Hail, Zodiac View, Willow, East Thorn, Zodiac Spires, etc, etc. I’m a big fan of the [...]

Jim. How far are those graves from the trailhead?

Getting deep into pretty much any valley in the northern two-thirds of the range will satisfy your requirements. Sorry for the slow delay…there’s not much activity in the winter.

Mosquitos are usually pretty rough in July on the eastern side of the range. I don’t recall exactly on this trip, but most others on this side at this time of year had pretty nasty mosquitos.

      Hi Jim,
We’re away on holiday for another week. But I noticed that the snow depth at the Rock Creek Snotel station on January 5 was the lowest for that date in the history of record-keeping at the site – dating back 32 years.

      See http://www.sgrhoa.net/snowpublic.htm

      Aloha,

      Bill

I made a point to check out the event. John was careful not to reveal too much, and made sure to mention the impenetrable bushwhacking. Needless to say, some amazing photos, from Black Creek and even from the windows of his home overlooking the GORE. Worthwhile event and cause.

The pictures were great. He went into Black Creek on the secret super trail, following it to its end, then up the south fork and over the ridge to Bubble Lake (just like Theron’s trip of a few years ago). Then across the middle fork and up the east slope of Powell to the summit. Then down and over to the north fork, up onto Dora’s summit, and down into Cataract. Nice trip. He missed the waterfall coming out of Bubble Lake, and vows to return to see that.

Been working on getting my up hill legs ready for touring season. The last three days have been fun. Powder and everything! Looking forward to getting more time in the Gore Range this winter. Skinning up Vail has provided some fuel for my day dreaming and trip planning.
