Jim, it looks like there is not much snow in the Gore this winter. My troops are getting ready for the trip I planned for last summer. Coming to Gore Creek Camp on June 29 from all around the world: Ukraine, Israel, Toronto, Boston, Baltimore, New Jersey. Hope the weather will cooperate.

Boy, that’s a good question. One good idea might be setting up a camp above the graves on the Gore Creek trail towards Red Buffalo Pass. Great options: Red Peak, Red Buffalo Pass, Gore Lake, Snow Lake, Snow Peak, Hail, Zodiac View, Willow, East Thorn, Zodiac Spires, etc, etc. I’m a big fan of the [...]

      Hi Jim,
We’re away on holiday for another week. But I noticed that the snow depth at the Rock Creek Snotel station on January 5 was the lowest for that date in the history of record-keeping at the site – dating back 32 years.

      See http://www.sgrhoa.net/snowpublic.htm

      Aloha,

I made a point to check out the event. John was careful not to reveal too much, and made sure to mention the impenetrable bushwhacking. Needless to say, some amazing photos, from Black Creek and even from the windows of his home overlooking the GORE. Worthwhile event and cause.

The pictures were great. He went into Black Creek on the secret super trail, following it to its end, then up the south fork and over the ridge to Bubble Lake (just like Theron’s trip of a few years ago). Then across the middle fork and up the east slope of Powell to the summit. Then down and over to the north fork, up onto Dora’s summit, and down into Cataract. Nice trip. He missed the waterfall coming out of Bubble Lake, and vows to return to see that.

11-18-11. Beautiful day for a snowshoe tour.

  • Jim Gabriel posted a new activity comment:   6 months ago · View

I just went for a beautiful snowshoe yesterday in the Corral Creek area of the southern Gore. If you had a day to work with, you could make a loop of it which might include Uneva Peak. You can access the TH on the west bound side of I70 at Vail Pass. It is a fee area, but they don’t start collecting until Nov 25. I usually just get a season pass for $40ish. Day passes are available. As a backcountry skier also, I ask that we snowshoers stay out of the skin track. It especially makes for a sketchy uphill. Happy trails.

Been working on getting my up hill legs ready for touring season. The last three days have been fun. Powder and everything! Looking forward to getting more time in the Gore Range this winter. Skinning up Vail has provided some fuel for my day dreaming and trip planning.

Yesterday was a perfect day for viewing the mountains of Colorado from 14k’. The Gore Range was the best, but maybe I’m biased. The Elks also were a hit.

ThumbnailLeft Booth Lake TH at 4:55am. Dark and a light rain. The rain intensified within the 1st 30 minutes. I put on my Gore-tex pants and found myself quite cozy. Somewhere between the falls and the turn for Druid and West Booth Passes rain turned to snow and dawn brightened things up-just a little. The first [...]
