Hiking the Gore Range: 10 months, 4 weeks agoI did the loop clockwise from the Surprise Lake Trailhead. I think there is a small fee to park there during the summer. I didn’t have any trouble parking but it was a Tuesday I believe. The first time I saw the area I had come over Elliot’s Ridge from Piney Lake (Vail side) and [...]

Hiking the Gore Range: 10 months, 4 weeks agoHere’s an old Backpacker Magazine article that basically describes the route I was talking about. I hadn’t seen this until today when I started reminiscing about the last time I was up that way and found it through google.

Hiking the Gore Range: 10 months, 4 weeks agoYou’ve chosen a good route so I sure don’t want to dissuade you, I was just suggesting another cool one and one that would help you avoid setting up a shuttle. I think both are similar in distance and difficulty. If you plan to summit Red then yours might be more difficult. Your Gore Creek [...]

Hiking the Gore Range: 10 months, 4 weeks agoHi Heath, That is a good route and you would certainly enjoy it. Since I live in Frisco, I’ve been around those parts more often than any other in the Gore. I would just comment that perhaps that area might see the most hikers of the entire Gore. You are likely to encounter other backpackers [...]

Yep Theron, and the Gore Range is about the only place in North / Central Colorado that is holding any snow at all. I’ve been mountain-biking trails around Summit County for weeks now that I couldn’t hit until July last year…. pretty amazing.

Last Tuesday through Saturday, August 23-27, 2011, I finally completed a long loop backback in the Gore Range that I had been eye-balling since I moved to Frisco four years ago. Here’s a recap of this unforgettable experience. Day 1: North Tenmile to Eccles Pass This was an easy head-start day. I hiked in about 3pm [...] -

Hi Scott,
What a great trip you have planned! Best of luck, especially day 4 – Powell, then down Black Creek and over to Slate – that’s a long day. I hope you’ll post a trip report and some pictures.
